The Recruit School is the 520-hour police academy that a
person must take in order to become a certified law enforcement officer in the state of
Wisconsin.
A person must have 60 college credits from an accredited institution of higher learning
in order to apply to get into the academy, unless they are already hired by a department
and the department is sending them to the academy.
Once a person applies for entrance to the academy, they will be notified of an
interview date for an interview in front of a law enforcement panel to determine whether
they should be allowed to enter the academy.
If accepted, a person needs to complete a criminal history check, medical exam, and
provide copies of numerous documents.
The academy runs from 6:50 a.m. - 5 p.m. for thirteen consecutive weeks, although some hours
will vary based on subject matter. The academy is mainly a Monday-Friday setting, but
there are some Saturday hours.
Recruits in the academy perform moderate physical fitness training each morning prior
to going to class. The training consists of running, circuit training, and tactical
aerobics, and rotates from day to day.
Recruits wear prescribed uniforms that are available at the NTC Bookstore. The
uniform is a maroon polo shirt and baseball hat. Separate T-shirts for Defensive
Tactics and Vehicle Contacts are also required.

Upcoming academies are scheduled for:
Aug. 23-Nov. 19, 2010
